Tour of 408 Helicopter Squadron

Learning about the Canadian Air Force

March 31, 2008

Taking Beavers and Cubs on special tours is a regular activity in our Group. This year our Beaver colonies were invited to visit 408 Tactical helicopter Squadron at CFB Edmonton (Steele Barracks).

On Wednesday evening, March 5th, 2008, 30 beavers, parents and leaders from both our Beaver colonies travelled to the base facilities that house 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron.

Taking the tour

Hosted by our Group Commissioner, Greg Cowan who is a helicopter pilot with 408 Squadron, our Beavers were given a tour of the maintenance hangers where they saw a Griffon helicopter partially disassembled for a major overhaul and safety inspection.

Scouter Jerry, who has participated in this tour several times, got to show all the Beavers the special night vision goggles attached to a pilot's helmet and each youngster was able to try them out.

All the Beavers were given an opportunity to climb into the cockpit of a Griffon helicopter and try the controls (with the engines off of course). At the end of the tour, everyone gathered for a group photograph and to say thanks to the officers and staff of 408 Squadron who organized and conducted the tour.
