What happens when Beavers mingle with other pets

Feb 26, 2007 - Gord Welling

On March 14th, the Wednesday night Beaver colony paid a visit to Paradise Pets on St. Albert Trail.

Tour of Paradise Pets

A large part of the Beaver program is to offer opportunities for our youngsters to explore their world. We do that by taking them on field trips and tours.

Kids and pets go together like toast and peant butter. A major challenge is ensuring that kids know and understand the responsibilities of having a pet. That's why we took our youngsters to Pradise Pets in St. Albert.

When we first arrived, we gathered everyone together in a sharing circle and let [staffer] show off typical pets and explain what kind of care each pet requires. A staff member brought out pets like a ferret, a parrot, and a small dog. [staffer] quizzed our youngsters on how they would take care of each pet he displayed. Smiles broke out each time an opportunity to pet an animal was offered.

After our sharing circle, we toured the fish tank areas we we saw exotic fish and reptiles. Then we saw staff cleaning the puppy pens and watched as a staff member transfered budgie birds from a cage to a transport box. Finally, each Beaver was allowed to feed the fish in the pond.

What a great tour! Our thanks to the staff at Paradise Pets who made us feel welcome and who ensured that out visit was extremely fun and educational.
