Having fun with a Beaver Craft
June 6, 2007 - Gord Welling
On April 4th, the Wednesday night Beaver colony took the evening to build Beaver Buggies. We started our evening like all regular meetings with river banks, forming a damn, roll call and feeding Big Brown Beaver.
Building Your Own Fun

One of the key features of the Beaver program is to let Beavers create things ... we call it crafts. Most regular meetings include a small craft that the youngster can take home to proudly display to Mom and Dad.

Many of our Beavers have older siblings who are in Cubs and have watched them build Kub Kars.
Recently, a similar kit became available at the Scout Shop for Beavers. Beaver Buggie kits include a set of plastic wheels that are set into a wood base. The youngsters also get a wood cutout of a beaver which they can decorate any way they want.

That's where most of the fun comes in. We invite our parents to join in on the action and help their kids.
We provided a kit for each Beaver and let them decorate their Beaver cutouts using markers and sparkle glue.
After offering some help to assemble the finished work, we ended up with was a wide assortment of artistic designs.

One of the great design concepts of the Beaver Buggie kit is that it uses the same wheel base as the Kub Kar kit, so you can actually race the Beaver Buggies on the same tracks as the Cubs use. We scheduled Beaver Buggie Races for the following week's regular meeting.
As we do at every meeting, we gathered the Beavers together to pass along announcements for the next week and then performed a traditional "closing" ... good night Beavers ... busy building tomorrow!
