Application Process for Scouting Honours and Awards


Who can nominate someone for an award?
Any adult or group of adults can nominate someone for an award. This can be a parent who wants to recognize the efforts of an outstanding leader, or a leader who wants to recognize the efforts of a parent volunteer or fellow leader. Parents can form a committee. The only stipulation is that a registered adult Scouts Canada member must sign the application form, so it's a good idea to get the Group Commissioner, Group Administrator or Group Registrar involved.

Keep in mind that the Group Commissioner has the option to form a Group Honours, Awards and Achievements Committee to ensure that all leaders, volunteers and youth are reviewed for potential nomination for an award, and/or to ensure that the presentation of awards are properly conducted.


Application Process


Here are the recommended steps to nominate someone for an award:

  1. Form a committee (if desired, for example: parents can form a committee to prepare a nomination for a leader).

  2. Review Scouts Canada’s Honours & Awards: an Overview and Guide to the Honours and Awards Process. This will help you to understand the criteria for each award, how to write a strong narrative, and help walk you through the steps.

  3. Download and print the applicable award application form. Use it to collect the necessary background information and draft the narrative.

  4. Put the draft work aside for at least one to two days before re-reading the draft to revise the narrative.

  5. Prepare the application form and send it to the Group Commissioner, who will ensure that the correct action is taken to forward the application form to the Northern Lights Council Honours and Awards Committee.
